Vinyl fence prices, per foot
A vinyl fence is panels that slide into hollow posts. You're mostly paying for plastic, so the price follows the height: taller panel, longer post, more money. At our October 2026 prices, 150 feet of 6-foot privacy vinyl comes to $4,200 in materials and $1,800 in labor, before gates.
| Fence | Materials / ft | Labor / ft | Installed / ft | 150 ft installed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vinyl picket, 4 ft | $15 | $9 | $20–$28 | $3,060–$4,140 |
| Vinyl privacy, 4 ft | $18 | $9 | $23–$31 | $3,440–$4,660 |
| Vinyl privacy, 5 ft | $23 | $10 | $28–$38 | $4,210–$5,690 |
| Vinyl privacy, 6 ft | $28 | $12 | $34–$46 | $5,100–$6,900 |

Why it costs more than wood, and why people pay it
Put that next to a wood fence and vinyl loses on day one. Look at where the money goes, though. Labor is the smaller part, because once the posts are set, panels go up fast.
The trade is upkeep. Wood wants stain or sealer every few years and a board replaced now and then. Vinyl wants a hose. If you're staying in the house a long time, that's the whole argument for it.
What makes one vinyl quote higher than another
Color, to start. White is the cheap one almost everywhere. Tan, gray and wood-grain finishes cost more for the same panel.
Then quality, which is harder to see. Thicker walls and a reinforced bottom rail are what keep a panel from sagging or rattling in the wind. Two quotes that look the same on paper can be for very different fence, so ask what brand and what wall thickness each one is for.
Slopes add work too. On a hill, panels either step down like stairs, which leaves gaps underneath, or you buy "rackable" panels made to tilt with the ground.
If you're installing it yourself
Vinyl is the easiest fence to put together and the least forgiving to lay out. The panels are a fixed width. Set two posts a couple of inches too far apart and the panel won't reach. Too close, and you're cutting the rails down and re-notching them.
So measure each post from the one before it, not from the start of the run, and check again before the concrete sets. Leave the small gap the instructions ask for where the rails go into the posts. Vinyl grows and shrinks with the temperature, and a panel jammed in tight on a cool day can buckle in summer.

Fair questions
Does vinyl really last?
It doesn't rot and insects don't eat it. What it can do is crack from a hard hit, more easily in deep cold, and fade a little over the years. Read the warranty before you buy, and read what it leaves out.
How many panels do I need?
Fence length divided by panel width, rounded up, and one more post than panels. Panels are usually 6 or 8 feet wide. This calculator assumes 8 and adds a post for each gate.
Vinyl or wood?
Run both through the fence cost calculator. Then add what you'd spend on stain over ten years and see whether vinyl still looks expensive.
