Deck calculators

Six calculators for building a deck and keeping it: the platform, the railing, the stairs, and what it costs to look after.

Which one do I need?

Start with the deck cost calculator. Give it a size and a decking material and it prices the whole deck, with railing on the open sides and stairs if you add them.

Use the deck railing calculator when the railing is the question: replacing an old one, comparing cable with glass, or pricing a layout that isn't three plain sides.

Not sure how many steps you need? The stair calculator works it out from the height of the deck, along with how far the stairs reach into the yard.

Torn between wood and composite? The composite vs wood calculator adds up both over 10 to 25 years, staining included.

Already have a deck? The staining calculator gives gallons and cost, and the resurfacing calculator prices new boards on the frame you have.

Deck prices at a glance

Decks are priced by the square foot. These are the suggested prices our calculators start from, last reviewed in October 2026:

DeckingMaterials / sq ftLabor / sq ftBuilt / sq ft
Pressure-treated pine$18$18$31–$41
Cedar$21$18$33–$45
Composite$30$26$48–$64
PVC$33$26$50–$68

They cover the platform: footings, framing, decking and hardware. Railing and stairs are added on top.

Before you build one

A deck is structure, and most places want a permit for one that's attached to the house or raised off the ground. Our board and joist counts are for budgeting. Your plans, and the building code where you live, decide the real framing.

The formulas and every suggested price are on the method page.
